The latest aircraft carrier to be commissioned, the USS Ronald W. Reagan (CVN-76), will have lots of improvements over the existing Nimitz-class carriers. Included are a ship-wide fiber optic network, much better air conditioning, more space for women, a redesigned island, only three arresting wires and a big honking bulbous nose that's supposed to make it all stable.
I wish I could have at least good A/C in the old USS America when I did my two cruises back in the early '80s. We had a TV station with two channels, that was about it...
UPDATE: As I was reading Scott at AMCGLTD's entry about this, I followed another link and discovered something potentially horrible! See if you can figure it out what chills me to my spine!!!
After the next carrier, the George H.W. Bush, the Navy intends to unveil a new design; it will be roughly the size of a Nimitz-class ship but with automated systems that could cut the ship's company of 3,200 by one-third or more and a new reactor able to power electromagnetic catapults and directed-energy weapons.
Did you figure it out? If the next carrier is gonna be named after GHW Bush, can the USS W. J. Clinton be far behind?!
AAAUUUGGGHHHH!!!!
